IN THE CAPITAL OF EUROPEAN CULTURE 2023!  TIMISOARA!  It is a city in Romania of about 330 thousand inhabitants, the capital of the Timis district, in the historic region of the banat. Its name derives from the Timis river, which flows into the Danube near Belgrade.  Timisoara is a multicultural city, with influential minorities, mainly Germans, Serbs and Italians.

Its position on the border with Serbia and Hungary has always favored it in trade with Western European nations.  In fact, many Italians from the Veneto, but in particular from Treviso, have an important history linked to the city of Timişoara and its entire province, Timiş.  In the early 1990s the arrival of globalization put the entire Italian production sector in crisis and many Venetian companies relocated their commercial activities to Romania, which allowed lower production costs, and Timişoara, as it is the closest Romanian city.  to Italy, welcomed most of these companies, especially clothing.  After this event Timişoara was called “the eighth Venetian province” or “Trevisoara”.

This city also has many firsts:

– It was the first in Europe to equip itself, in 1884 with the first electricity network;
– From 1760 it was the first city of the Habsburg Empire to illuminate its streets with lamps and the first to convert them to gas in 1855;
– First city of the Austro-Hungarian Empire to create a navigable canal (the Bega), to create a telephone network, to use the telegraphic service, to make use of the asphalt for road pavement, to have three state theaters and to present  works in Romanian, Hungarian and German.
